Bonsai Alternative: Why Mappli Is a Better Fit for Europe
Bonsai is a solid tool for freelancers. But it was built for the US market. If you work in Europe, you notice quickly: no Swiss QR invoicing, no eIDAS signatures, no automatic reverse charge detection. Mappli was built from the ground up for the European market.
What Bonsai does well
Bonsai offers invoicing, contracts, time tracking and accounting in one tool. The interface is clean, onboarding is fast. For US freelancers, it is a solid choice.
Particularly strong: automatic tax calculation for US states and integration with US banks and payment services.
Where Bonsai falls short
For freelancers and agencies in Europe, there are some gaps:
- No Swiss QR invoicing. The Swiss standard for payment slips is not supported. You need to create QR codes manually or use a separate tool.
- No eIDAS e-signature. Bonsai uses its own signature system that does not qualify as an advanced or qualified signature in the EU. Mappli uses PAdES-B per eIDAS standard.
- No reverse charge. Bonsai does not automatically detect whether a cross-border B2B invoice needs a reverse charge notice. You have to check manually.
- No country-specific payment references. No SCOR (ISO 11649), no KID (Norway), no OGM/VCS (Belgium). Payments cannot be matched automatically.
- US servers, GDPR questionable. Bonsai stores data in the USA. For EU clients, this is a compliance risk, especially without a clear DPA.
- No real client portal. Clients can view invoices and contracts, but there is no dedicated space with projects, files, chat and tasks.

Bonsai remains a good choice for freelancers working exclusively in the US market who need US tax integration.
